The Nursery School Assistant
The expansion of all types of programs for young children has been rapid. So much so that trained assistants have not always been available. Many mothers and women with previous experience in kindergarten or primary teaching are now participating in the nursery schools and learning while they work.
Others who have given valuable assistance while learning are: the student teacher in teacher training institutions, the high school cadet who is combining practice in nursery school with courses in child care and family relations, the volunteer worker (both professional and lay person), the senior Girl Scout, the participating mother who is earning her child’s tuition or working for her own satisfaction in learning, and the mothers in cooperative play groups.
The following pages are addressed to this type of worker and also to parents seeking help in child guidance. Their purpose is to give information concerning the organization and functioning of preschool programs; to present briefly and clearly the essentials of good nursery school and preschool procedure and practices, and to state a philosophy of education and guidance. Suggestions for the teachers and assistants of things to do and not to do in learning and play situations.
